What Are Cosmetic Composite Fillings?

Most people have had a filling at some point in their lives. The most common used is the silver amalgam. Dentists will usually recommend this treatment where decay can be removed to save a tooth, and in its place a compound inserted, to protect the remaining tooth and prevent further decay.

Silver amalgam is a common, cost-effective option, used in many cases where the affected tooth is not easily seen. Cosmetic, white fillings, also known as onlays and inlays, take into account the appearance of the tooth and its visibility in the patient’s mouth.

Disadvantages of silver fillings

Health concerns associated with metal fillings can influence a patient’s decision to opt for non-mercury alternatives. While it is understood that risks are low, patients believed to be at-risk or sensitive to certain materials, should consult with their doctor before proceeding with dental treatment.

Advantages of cosmetic fillings

White fillings are made from a safe, resin composite of plastic ceramic material. Fillings are matched to and indistinguishable from the tooth’s natural color. Many patients favor white fillings or inlays, as the compound preserves the natural look of teeth, and presents no potential health concerns.

What happens when I get a filling?

The affected tooth and surrounding area of the mouth will be numbed before the dentist begins treatment. Discuss your concerns or fears with the dentist, ahead of your appointment, to allay any anxieties you may have about the procedure.

Once the decayed area of the tooth is removed painlessly with a drill, the cavity is filled with silver amalgam or white compound. Both are molded and smoothed to sit flush against the tooth’s surface. White fillings are polished to blend with the tooth.

Can I get my metal fillings replaced with white fillings.

Of course you can and many people do this in the US every day, as for one reason or another they want their metal fillings replaced with cosmetic fillings and their mouths to remain metal free.

What should I do if I want composite fillings?

Make an appointment at our office to see one of our dentists and discuss removing the metal fillings from which we will do by using a special protective dam. We will also give you an estimate of the costs and see if your insurances company will cover any of the costs.
