What is INVISALIGN?

austin dental plus

Our Forest Hills dentists will use Invisalign’s 3-D computer imaging technology to design a complete treatment plan, from the initial position of your teeth to the straight, attractive smile you’ll enjoy at the end of treatment. In most cases, Invisalign can straighten teeth in 6 to 24 months.

Austin Dental Plus provided hundreds of patients with INVISALIGN and changed the way they smile by straightening their teeth the clear way.

With Invisalign clear braces, you can claim the perfectly aligned teeth you’ve always wanted – without compromising your professional image. Invisalign is a series of clear, custom-made aligners that gradually move teeth into place. For convenience, clear Invisalign aligners can be removed for cleaning teeth or for special occasions.

How does Invisalign® work?

Invisalign technology provides a more comfortable and convenient option than traditional wire-and-bracket braces. The clear braces don’t cause mouth abrasions and dental “scars” that are often associated with conventional braces. In addition, you won’t have to come to our dental office for adjustment appointments.

Patients simply graduate to a new set of Invisalign trays every two weeks and visit our dentist at Austin Dental Plus for progress checks every six weeks or so.

Because you remove your Invisalign aligners before you eat or drink, you’ll enjoy your meals without food getting trapped in your orthodontia-and you won’t have to restrict your diet to soft, easy-to-chew foods.

Invisalign will allow you to keep your teeth and gums healthy, because you can remove the aligners to floss and brush.

Is INVISALIGN® right for you

No one enjoys a crooked or mis-aligned smile. The majority of people with crooked teeth are very self-conscious about the way they look and they dont like to smile. Invisalign Teen providers at Austin Dental Plus can change all that by using the state-of-the-art orthodontic treatment, the Invisalign Teen orthodontic system.

How does Invisalign® work?

Invisalign consists of a series of practically invisible clear plastic aligners that you change every two weeks, to a slightly straighter set. Each aligner is custom-made and designed to progressively move your teeth into the proper position. Each Invisalign dental aligner is especially made to the exact calculation to fit your individual bite and smile so you can rest assured that we will be creating a smile that truly fits you and you alone

We start the Invisalign treatment by a thorough evaluation of your mouth including your teeth, upper and lower jaws, jaw joints, facial muscles, and view them as a complete system. We will then be able to decide whether Invisalign is the correct treatment for you. Our dentist will then take accurate impressions of your teeth and submit them to Invisalign. Using state-of-the-art advancements in 3-D computer technology, Align Technology will create your custom-fit aligners based upon your doctor’s precise instructions. Each set of Invisalign aligners is worn for two weeks, moving your teeth gently and gradually, millimeter by millimeter, every day until the desired results have been achieved. The typical treatment time for a full Invisalign Teen treatment is typically around 12 months.

Unlike conventional metal braces that everyone can see, Invisalign is virtually invisible and undetectable. Invisalign will not hold you back because you can completely remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush and floss. You will not feel any irritation to your gums and cheeks because unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign has smooth, soft edges.

Invisalign uses a series of removable, clear plastic aligners that progressively straighten a teen’s smile millimeter by millimeter week by week.

Invisalign can be used to treat overly crowded teeth, crooked teeth, spaced teeth, deep overbites, cross-bites and under-bites.

Only a trained Invisalign provider can determine if Invisalign is the correct orthodontic treatment modality for you.

After you consult with your doctor, impressions of all your teeth are made and the aligners are manufactured utilising state-of-the-art 3-D technology that maps out your teeth’s movement. These new teen-targeted aligners are shaped in a way that allows your permanent teeth to grow-in comfortably. They have a Blue Dot Wear Indicator that fades away every two week, letting you know when you need a new set of aligners.

Invisalign easily adapts to a teen’s active and busy lifestyle by offering optional replacement aligners should they get lost.

Because Invisalign is virtually invisible, teens are finding themselves smiling more during and after their treatment. Being teased for having metal braces is now a thing of the past.

Invisalign patients have the confidence to succeed both in and out of school. Invisalign aligners are removable and promote better oral hygiene as well as offering a virtually pain-free experience with less irritation to the gums and mouth. The best part about Invisalign is that they can be removed for special occasions in a teenager’s life, like the prom or graduation.

Q and A about Invisalign

Every set number of weeks we schedule an appointment so that the patient comes in and we give them their new aligner. These aligners are made in a series and you simply replace the old one with the new one very few weeks. Every set number of weeks your change your aligner because they are molded to each individual patient’s teeth. So that you can simply replace one with the next in the series every few weeks, gently moving your teeth over time. Generally, they are taken out for eating and cleaning and prevent the common problem of getting food stuck in braces.

In terms of whom as a patient is a suitable candidate there are many different types of categories of patient that we see every day. They may be patients with overcrowded teeth, spaced teeth , underbites, overbites, or crossbites. They are other types of cases but these are the main ones. Generally speaking people requesting Invisalign are patients that are conscious about the way their teeth look and decide it’s time to fix it.

Sometimes we actually advise patients to choose Invisalign. Sometimes we may see an issue with overcrowding in the patients mouth. This is a problem for the patient as crooked teeth or teeth that don’t fit together properly become harder to clean. This inadvertently increases the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. We can also identify other health problems that are attributed to crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw. This can also include extra stress being put on the chewing muscles while masticating. Believe it or not this is why people with this condition complain about headaches and shoulder and back pain.

How often must I wear my aligners each day?

You must wear your aligners for up to 22 hours daily. This is very important as your teeth must be under the continual pressure exerted by the aligners, in order for it to work effectively. However you may remove them for eating, drinking and regular oral hygiene and after you have eaten always brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in.

What restrictions are there to what I can eat during treatment?

Fortunately, unlike traditional metal braces, you may eat whatever you like as long as you remove the aligners before eating. Prior to placing the aligners back on, it is important to brush your teeth and the aligners after you eat.  https://www.youtube.com/embed/IGbOU-_GCP0

Can the aligners affect my speech?

As with all orthodontic treatments, there is a short adjustment period whereby the patient will take time to get used to wearing the aligners. The more you speak with the aligners on, the quicker you will adjust.

How often will I have to visit the office?

How often will I have to visit the office?

It is important to keep your appointments and regular office visits once you have the aligners. Appointments are scheduled every five to six weeks. This will ensure that your Invisalign treatment is progressing as planned.

What happens after my treatment is complete? Do I need retainers?

We advise all our Invisalign  patients to wear their retainers at night indefinitely. When the patient sleeps with your retainers in at night this will ensure a healthy bite and maintain the new position of your teeth.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Treatment time can vary depending on the severity of the misaligned teeth. Treatment time can be shorter than traditional braces, between six and 18 months, which is the average but at the most it will be around 22 months.

Why do patients tend to prefer Invisalign over traditional metal braces?

Patients tend to prefer Invisalign over traditional braces when they want their orthodontics to be discrete. Using aligners means that you can take them out whenever you need to. One of the great benefits of Invisalign is that the full process tends to take less time than it would with traditional braces. However, each patient’s treatment is different and some may take longer than others.

Can  you go into more detail about the types of patients that are suitable for Invisalign?

The first type of patient is one with overcrowded teeth.

This happens when there is insufficient space for all the teeth in the jaw bone. If this remains untreated, the overcrowding could get even worse. The overcrowding issue can cause various oral and dental health problems, such as gum disease, tooth decay, and development of plaque. This is one of the great benefits of Invisalign – it can solve future problems that might arise while at the same time creating esthetic appeal and nice straight teeth.

Secondly we have spaced teeth. This situation occurs when the jawbone continues to grow abnormally. This can also result when there are missing teeth, which cause other teeth to shift due to the fact that there is increased space for them. The problem with spaced teeth is that it is not just a physical problem but because they are not protected by teeth it can also create a gum problem and there is risk of periodontal disease.

Underbites are another  common dental issue wherby the upper and lower jaws are not aligned. This causes the lower tooth to protrude beyond the front teeth. There are three main reasons for this: the undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of lower jaw or both of these conditions acting in tandem.

This can prevent the teeth from functioning properly, which causes a wearing down of teeth.

Overbite is obviously the opposite of under-bite whereby the upper jaw protrudes beyond the lower jaw. Dentists often refer to this as ‘overjet’.

Lastly a situation we see is the ‘cross-bite’ which happens when the upper and lower jaws are not aligned properly. When one or more of the upper teeth bite down they touch the inside of the lower teeth. This causes the teeth to chip and can result in abnormal tooth wear and periodontal problems that will eventually cause loss of the jawbone.
